Centrally located in the picturesque old town with its medieval-looking half-timbered houses is St. John's Church (Johanneskirche) with impressive tombs of the von Kronberg family, and a painted wooden barrel vault. Right next to the Protestant church is the "Streitkirche" ("Conflict Church"), built as a Catholic church in the 18th century under the rule of Electoral Mainz but never consecrated as such. Also from the time of the Electors of Mainz is the "Receptur", the main civic building of the time, whose courtyard opens up behind an archway from the 16th century. Opposite is the "Zum Adler" inn, rebuilt after the town fire of 1780 and once the meeting place of the painters belonging to the artists' colony.
